Hero Sheilds Project
Not all heroes wear capes but the Lions Clubs across District 133 have helped to make sure our heroes are wearing shields. Lions Clubs across the Island of Ireland proudly followed the lead of Macroom Lions with the Hero Shield Project by donating €1,000. It began back in March 2020 when we started to realise how serious a threat Covid 19 was and lockdown became the new norm. Our samples were approved by HSE/NHS Covid 19 Teams and are EU Standard PPE. Cobh Lions Club Secretary and Zone Chair Orla Flavin was co-lead on this fantastic project.
With restrictions imposed, it was difficult for Lions Clubs to serve their communities and help during a pandemic. The Lions Hero Shield Project gave Lions Clubs the opportunity to help their communities in a safe way by donating funds to this project. Our target was to raise €100,000 to fund the manufacturing and distribution of Lions Hero Shields to front line workers. We proudly achieved this through clubs in District 133 coming together to support this project.
We also had huge support with manufacturing and distribution. From our initial suppliers Hero Shield, Delforno Tile Stores, An Gardai Siochana, along with the Blood Bikes in Northern Ireland to Glen Dimplex who became our suppliers when the NHS ordered all of Hero Shields supplies going forward.
The project donated approximately 50,000 visors to front line workers across the island of Ireland, proof, where there is a need there is a Lion! For further information about the project, please email the Lions Hero Shield Coordinator Orla Flavin of Cobh Lions at orlaflavin@gmail.com
The Hero Shield Project co-ordinators won a Lions International Presidents Award at our recent 2021 convention.
